Latest Saga in the Ali-O’Neil bout
July 29, 2006

(JULY 29) The latest news stories swirling around the globe is that Officials in Johannesburg, South Africa are now attempting to woo Laila Ali back to South Africa, for her originally scheduled (and canceled) fight against Gwendolyn O’Neil that was set for August 5th. The fight was dropped after a promoter’s failure to secure funding for this fight, according to the news media.

Ali had flown to South Africa last week to get prepared to fight O’Neil, when the last word WBAN had received from the  Ali camp was that the fight was off---and they were heading back to the U.S.A.

According to Reuters, promoter Joe Manyathi of Sta-Trade has a reputation for offering empty promises of historic bouts to be staged in South Africa.  Does the Mike Tyson vs. Lennox Lewis ring a bell?

They have also reported that a “new Sponsor” has come forward, and they are now trying to get Ali to return to fight O’Neil.
