ONTARIO, CALIFORNIA-Sarah Goodson got
her revenge, but it failed to be as sweet as planned.
Goodson used an accurate right hand to pound her way to a unanimous
decision over Sandra Ortiz (7-4-1) at the Hilton Hotel in Ontario
before 400 fans on Wednesday. Ortiz had won their first encounter
three months ago in Kansas City.
Though Goodson beat Ortiz, it was scheduled to be a world title
fight for the WIBF strawweight title, but complications due to
last-minute blood work and other matters made it a nontitle fight.
“We’re going to check to see if they (California Commission) will
allow it to be for the title,” said Stacy Goodson, husband and
trainer to Sarah. (Update: WBAN has been notified that this was a
title bout, and will send documentation to change this to a title
bout)
In the eight round fight Goodson used her right hand like a
bludgeon, continually bouncing punches off Ortiz’s head like a
tetherball.
“I hit hard,” said Goodson (20-15-1) who lives in Paris, Arkansas.
“I did the same thing in the first fight, but we fought in her
hometown.”
Rounds one through four saw Goodson land that right on Ortiz’s head.
She didn’t have an answer for that right hand until the fifth round.
In that round Ortiz began to take the fight inside by lowering her
head and bulling her way in. Referee Tony Crebs warned her for the
intentional head ramming but she continued to do it, but not as low
as before.
By taking the fight inside, she kept Goodson off balance and began
giving the Filipina fighter a better contest. Both tried to fight in
close but were pretty ineffective.
“She doesn’t throw punches when she’s in like that,” said Stacy
Goodson of Sarah. “In the first two rounds she was perfect. But
after the fourth round she wasn’t throwing enough punches.”
Goodson’s stamina allowed her to rev up her punches in the eighth
and final round as she whipped right hands once again. Though few
landed, she was in control.
“I don’t know what happened,” said Ortiz, who lives in Kansas City.
“I guess I didn’t do what my corner wanted.”
Goodson said the victory felt good.
“She’s tough, but I hit hard,” Goodson said.
The judges scored it 79-73, 78-74, 77-75 for Goodson.
