Females Headline Fights at the Fitz
Source: Press Release
June 29, 2006

MEMPHIS, TN - JUNE 29 - The July 8, 2006 edition of The Fitz Casino “Fights at the Fitz” series features an intriguing women’s welterweight match up as Miriam Brakache battles Angelica Martinez in a six round special attraction.

Brakache 4-2 (1 KO) from Atlanta, GA has been featured at the Fitz before as she battled local favorite Cristy “Code Red” Nickel in January of 2005. Miriam Brakache recently won the IBA Jr. Middleweight World Title with a convincing 10 round decision over Nickel in Beijing, China.

Meeting Brakache in the main event will be world ranked Angelica Martinez who herself is no stranger to big time prize fights. Martinez missed out on her bid to become a world champion as she lost a tough 10 round battle to World Title holder Holly Holm last month in Albuquerque, NM.

The winner of this highly anticipated match up will certainly be considered for another shot at the world title. Also featured on the July 8th card will be Rayonta Whitfield as he meets Roberto Gomez in a 6 round Jr. Bantamweight match up. Whitfield 14-0 (8 KO’s), who has been featured many times at The Fitz, recently took center stage on ESPN2 Friday Night Fights from The Pepsi Pavilion in Memphis, TN as he dominated Luis Doria before stopping him with a vicious attack in the 4th round.

The card will be rounded out with Super Featherweight Jose “Pepe” Rubio 5-1 (3 KO’s), teenage sensation Ira Terry 5-0 (3 KO’s) from Memphis, TN and up and coming welterweight prospect Jesse Lara 10-1 (7 KO’s). The Tunica resident Rubio will square off against San Antonio native Rudy Paz in a 4 round bout that is sure to be action packed from bell to bell.

Newly crowned NABO Lightweight Champion Anthony Peterson will be at the event as he will be doing color commentary for the UPN Fight Night Series alongside host Greg Gaston. Doors open at 7 PM and the first fight will begin shortly thereafter. Tickets for the event are on sale now at The Fitz Casino Gift Shop and are $25 in advance and $30 at the door the night of the event.
