(JULY 3) Marcela Eliana Acuña had to revise her
game plan rather smartly last night in Tucumán, when her opponent, Mónica
Salino Barbosa of Brazil, turned out to be slipperier and more dangerous
than expected. "The intention had been to soften her up with a right hand in
the first round," commented Acuña, "but I had to change strategy to check
her movement and avoid surprises."
Barbosa´s luck ran out in the fourth, when Acuña sent her to the canvas with
what was described as a 'precise' and ´murderous´ combination. The Brazilian
managed to beat the count and the referee actually waved the fight on, but
her own corner threw in the towel, realising she was still dazed and about
to get hurt.In contrast, the semi main
event was disgraceful. María "La Guapa" Montiel (1-3) defeated Rita Oliveira
by TKO in the first round. It was all so miserable that one had the
impression it was the first time the Brazilian
had ever been in the ring.
Montiel had promised Tucumán a spectacular
victory over her own Brazilian, Rita Oliveira, in the semi main event.
Whether or not it was spectacular, it was certainly quick, the TKO setting
up the Argentinian double coming in only the first round.
In heavyweight men's action on the undercard, Héctor Muñoz, who had promised
to rip Manuel Pucheta's head off, got caught with a left hook, if you
believe Diario Hoy, or a right cross, if you prefer the Página Argentina de
Boxeo, (perhaps it was just a clumsy attempt at a cuddle?) and was counted
out in less than a minute.

Acuna to fight Barboza
Source: Ewan Whyte
(JULY 2) Tonight at the club Caja Popular, in Tucuman, Argentina, Marcela
“La Tigresa” Acuña (Argentina) (55.2 kg) will be fighting Mónica
Salino Barboza (Brazil) (55.3 kg), in an eight-round non-title fight.
The two will headline the card. According to La Gaceta de Tucumán both women
looked to be in tremendous shape. A few days ago, Acuña was still completely
in the dark about her opponent. “I don’t know much about her except that
she’s Brazilian, she’s had 10 fights and won eight of them, I believe, by
KO. I’ve seen no videos of her so I really don’t know what I’m up against”.
Now that they’ve made a few enquiries, they think they know what to expect.
Says Ramón Chaparro, husband and trainer of “La Tigresa”:
“We already have our game plan worked out. Marcela has to corner her and not
let her run. At close range, the champion should be able to define the
outcome with her right hand.” In the semi-main event, María del Carmen “La
Guapa” Montiel (Argentina) (55.6 kg) will go six rounds against Rita
Oliveira (Brazil) (55.6 kg).
There were no scales at the weigh-in venue so all 16 fighters had to pile
into taxis. The weigh-in eventually took place in a chemist’s in the centre
of town.
THE REST OF THE BILL:
HEAVYWEIGHT (6 rounds)
Manuel Pucheta v Héctor Andrés Muñoz
(at the weigh-in, Muñoz told Pucheta he would rip his head off)
Preliminaries -5 amateur bouts
Juan José José v Roberto Cabrera
Osvaldo Rodríguez v Gustavo Boggio
Fabián Flores v Marcos Juárez
Daniel Alfredo v Comaschi-Carlos Abregú
Cecilia Mena v Natalia Vera |
