(AUG 4) One of four professional women to make it to the 2004 U.S. Women’s
National Championships that took place from July 27 - July 31, to show the
young amateurs support was Eliza Olson. The 5’5 145 lb., welterweight, whose
grandfather is the late Carl “Bobo” Olson, was quite the entertainer at this
event.
Olson who fights out of Gladiators Training Academy in Redwood City,
California never got a minutes rest, making it her mission to show her
support for every athlete she could make contact with. With over 100
athlete’s participating, that was quite an effort!
Having grown up in a home where boxing was a part of her every day life,
Eliza was full of encouragement and advice coupled with some experience and
insight, she was a blessing for young eager minds. Her sincerity was
calming, her enthusiasm was invigorating and motivating, and her sense of
humor was a great tension reliever! She seemed to have left each athlete
feeling happy to have met her.
For me, Eliza was like a text book waiting to be read. She can talk boxing
for hours. She understands it, she lives for it. Her advice was on the money
and her dedication to being an example to the young amateurs is admirable. A
life long athlete, a skilled and talented boxer, charming and thoughtful,
Eliza Olson is an excellent example of what young women in boxing can aspire
to become. She was inspirational.
Olson, who has fought a hard battle to overcome dyslexia, wants all young
athletes to know that anything is possible. If there is a mountain in front
of Eliza Olson, and she can’t find a way to climb it, I imagine she would
just simply go around it. |
