Riot at the Hyatt
Monterey, CA
Saturday, July 3, 2004
©Photos and report by Jesus Sanchez

Main Event – Jr. Middleweight
“Dangerous” Ryan Davis, St. Louis, MO W6 James “Dark Angel” Buggs, Oakland, CA In stark contrast to their previous meeting last year in a Riot at the Hyatt show, these two fighters were hesitant and cautious in the first two rounds of last night’s bout. Davis and Buggs got things going in the third round when more meaningful punches were thrown but it was Davis who landed the more effective punches. In the 6th and final round Ryan, clearly confident that he had the fight won, traded power shots with James and at one point shouted, “Bring it!” Two judges scored this fight 58-56 and the third judge 58-57 all for Ryan Davis. Davis improves to 16-3-2 while Buggs falls to 6-5.

Semi Main Event – Mini Flyweight
Carina Moreno, Watsonville, CA W6 Deidre Hamaguchi, Harlem, NY

In the only women’s bout of the evening, local favorite Carina Moreno was dominant in every facet of the game against a tough but outgunned Deidre Hamaguchi. Carina used an effective jab to set-up her right hand. By the fourth round Hamaguchi’s nose was a bleeding mess. Carina came out in the 6th round determined to win this one by knockout throwing, and landing, straight rights but Deidre hung on to force this one to the scorecards. There was no surprise as all three judges scored unanimously for Carina Moreno. Two judges scored it 60-54 while one judge saw it at 60-53. Carino remains undefeated at 5-0.

Bout 4 – Bantamweight
Larry Olvera, San Pedro, CA KO6 Ricardo “Danger”
Junez, Napa, CA
There is nothing subtle about Ricardo and his style of fighting…he is exciting and he throws every punch with mean intentions, thus his nickname “Danger”! Ricardo came out throwing and landing overhand rights and vicious left hooks that had Olvera in trouble in the first three rounds of this bout. Near the end of the second round Junez landed a straight right that had Olvera down and almost out but to his credit he got up and survived the round. In what could have been a sign of things to come, Olvera started the fourth round with a beautiful three punch combination and slowly the tide started to turn. Olvera had Junez hurt in round five. Olvera had Junez down in the early moments of round six and eventually out as referee Marcos Rosales signaled that Junez could not continue. Olvera goes to 4-3 while Junez, suffering his first defeat as a pro, moves to 3-1-1.

Bout 3 – Jr. Lightweight
Sadot Vazquez, Oxnard, CA W4 Sergio Gomez,
San Jose, CA

Sadot Vazquez was impressive in his pro-debut against tough Sergio Gomez. A fighter to watch, Vazquez established his right hand early and often in this one. Gomez was game and landed several of his power shots but it was not enough as Vazquez won this one on all three scorecards, 40-36.

Bout 2 – Featherweight
Jose Perez Jr., Fremont, CA W4 Leo Samaurai” Diaz, Pomona, CA

Another fighter to watch, 5-time National Amateur Champion Perez was just too much for Diaz. Perez, a classy boxer, used effective body punching to eventually hurt Diaz in the third round. Diaz held often and ducked low to avoid the punches of Perez. Perez pitched a shutout in his second pro outing with all three judges scoring 40-36 for Perez. Jose remains undefeated at 2-0 while Diaz drops to 0-4.

Bout 1 – Lt. Heavyweight
Jeremy Jackson, Oxnard, CA KO3 Sheldon Callum, San Francisco, CA

A UFC champion, Jeremy Jackson was successful in his pro-debut with a brutal third round knockout of Sheldon Callum. Jackson now 1-0, Callum now 6-6.
