(NOV 21) Last night in Kansas City, Missouri, Delia "Chikita"
Gonzalez fought hometowner' Mary Ortega. The fight was to be a
10-rounder for the WIBA America's Continental belt. The weight was
set to be 115 lbs---Ortega came in at 118 lbs., and then 117 lbs and did
not make weight. Ortega won by a unanimous decision and the belt was
placed around her waist....Gonzalez's team contacted WBAN to give an "Inside
look" as to what had happened last night! Team Gonzalez Statement
The day of the weigh-in, at 5 p.m., Delia Gonzalez weighed
in at 115 lbs. At 5:35 p.m., Mary Ortega weighed in at 118 lbs.
(Three pounds over). At 7:35 p.m. Mary Ortega weighed in at 117 lbs. (Two
pounds over).
Due to title fight rules fighters must:
Fighters must weight in at the weight
division fighting for the title. Mary Ortega did not make her weight at during the weigh-in nor after the
extended time allotted to her to make weight.
According to title rules:
Mary Ortega was not illegible to
fight for the title. Mary was fined and a deduction was
subtracted from her purse.
At that point an understanding between
the Gonzalez Team, Ortega Team, The Kansas City Commission, the Promoter
and the Representative of the WIBA concluded:
If Delia was to win she would be awarded
the title; however, if Mary were to win she would not be awarded the
title due to her not fulfilling her obligations to make weight. The title was not to be presented after
the fight unless Delia was to win.
November 20th day of the fight and AFTER
Gonzalez had lost by a decision:
Tony Gonzalez, trainer, viewed the fight as
Delia having a 3:1 punch advantage over Mary and after viewing the fight
he maintains his viewpoint. The Gonzalez team prepared for the fight and
arrived in Kansas City knowing that Delia would return victorious only by
a knockout. Unfortunately, the decision went to the Kansas City fighter.
To add insult to injury Mary was
presented with the title belt after the fight despite previous agreement made
between teams, promoter, commissioners, and WIBA representative.
This letter was written so as to
communicate the actual events, which transpired leading up to the fight.
With respect to the all parties involved the lack of the professionalism
was beyond comprehension and thus, despite the wishes of Delia Gonzalez,
the team has decided to release this statement.
Sincerely,
Rebecca Rodriguez
Team Gonzalez
*Note: WBAN contacted Delia tonight and she said that she
was told AFTER the fight, that Ortega would be strip of the belt
shortly after the fight. BUT what she and her team does not understand was
why was she awarded the belt---after the discussions that went on before
the fight.
