(SEPT 30) Toledo, Ohio – Iowa City native and
University of Iowa student Emily Klinefelter won the National Police
Athletic Activities League (PAL) Championships this past week, defeating
Ohio's Amber Miller and Mandie Mutigli, and New York's Keisher McLeod. Emily
finishes the year ranked #1 in the nation at 110 pounds. Along with her PAL
national title, this year she won U.S. and Ringside National Championships,
totaling four national titles in her three year, 27-bout career. 19 year old
Klinefelter will be flying to Sweden this week to represent the U.S. in a
dual meet against that nation.
Emily’s 16 year old sister Katy Klinefelter also finishes the year
ranked #1 as a 125 pound junior, making them the only sisters to win
national championships, and the only ones to be top ranked.
Attending the tournament was 1996 Olympic gold medalist and former world
champion David Reid, along with former champs Emile Griffith and Robert
Garcia, as well as champion trainer Lou Duva. For men, the PAL is an
Olympic-qualifying event. Women’s boxing remains the only Olympic sport that
continues to discriminate against women, despite the fact that over 35
countries worldwide have recognized boxing programs.
